Sunan Ibn Majah 2554 (Book 20, Hadith 22) #31908
Forgiveness in the Face of Punishment

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who confessed to committing fornication four times and was ordered to be stoned, but he ran away. The Prophet ﷺ asked why he was not allowed to flee.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "Ma'iz bin Malik came to the Prophet and said: 'I have committed fornication,' and he (the Prophet ) turned away from him. He said: 'I have committed fornication,' and he turned away from him. Then, he said: I have committed fornication, and he turned away from him, until when he had confessed four times, he ordered that he should be stoned. When he was being struck with the stones, he ran away, but a man caught up with him who had a camel's jawbone in his hand; he struck him and he fell down. The Prophet was told about how he fled when the stones hit him and he said: 'Why did you not let him be?'"

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion and understanding towards those who have wronged us or broken laws; Repent sincerely for our sins; Remember that Allah will always forgive us if we repent sincerely for our sins; Allow people to flee when they are being punished.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of forgiveness and mercy even when punishment is due. Ma'iz bin Malik committed a sin and confessed it four times, yet the Prophet still showed him mercy by asking why he was not allowed to flee when being stoned. This teaches us that even in cases where punishment is necessary, we should still show compassion and understanding towards those who have wronged us or broken laws. We should also remember that no matter how bad our mistakes are, Allah will always forgive us if we sincerely repent for our sins.
