Sunan Ibn Majah 2375 (Book 14, Hadith 1) #31727
Treating Children Equally

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised a father to treat all his children equally and not to favor one over the other.

It was narrated that Nu'man bin Bashir said that his father took him to the Prophet and said: "Bear witness that I have given Nu'man such and such from my wealth". He said: "Have you given all your children something like that which you have given to Nu'man?" He said: "No". He said: "Then let someone other than me bear witness to that". And he said: "Would you not like all your children to honor you equally?" He said: "Of course". He said: "Then do not do this".

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat your children fairly; Do not show favoritism towards one child over another; Strive for justice in your dealings with others; Respect everyone regardless of their status or position in life .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of treating all children equally. It was narrated by Nu'man bin Bashir that his father took him to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said he wanted to give him something from his wealth. The Prophet asked if he had given all of his children something similar, and when he said no, the Prophet advised him not to do it as it would be unfair for the other children. He then asked if he would like all of his children to honor him equally, which the father agreed with. This hadith teaches us that parents should treat their children fairly and not show favoritism towards one child over another as this can lead to resentment between siblings and cause disharmony in a family. It also teaches us that we should strive for justice in our dealings with others so that everyone is treated fairly regardless of their status or position in life.
