Sahih al-Bukhari 3316 (Book 59, Hadith 122) #3169
Protecting Oneself from Jinns and Rats at Night

SUMMARY: This hadith is about taking precautions to protect oneself and one's belongings from the mischief of jinns and rats at night.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: The Prophet said, "Cover your utensils and tie your water skins, and close your doors and keep your children close to you at night, as the Jinns spread out at such time and snatch things away. When you go to bed, put out your lights, for the mischief-doer (ie the rat) may drag away the wick of the candle and burn the dwellers of the house". Ata said, "The devils". (instead of the Jinns).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is a reminder for us to take precautionary measures when going to bed at night. We should cover our utensils, tie our water skins, close our doors, keep our children close by us, put out all lights before going to bed as jinns spread out during this time and can snatch things away. Additionally, we should be aware that even a small creature like a rat can cause harm by dragging away the wick of a candle which may lead to burning down one's house. Therefore it is important for us to take these precautions in order for us stay safe and secure during nighttime hours.
