Sunan Ibn Majah 2269 (Book 12, Hadith 133) #31621
Selling Estimated Harvest of Dates

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave a concession to sell the estimated harvest of dates on the trees for food that was ripe.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar that he said: "Zaid bin Thabit told me that the Messenger of Allah gave a concession regarding the sale of the estimated harvest of 'Araya return for dried dates". (Sahih) Yahya (one of the narrators) said: "The 'Araya is when a man purchases dates on the trees for food that his family has that is ripe, by estimating them (the dates)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest in your dealings with others and do not take advantage by overcharging or undercharging for goods or services.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about a concession given by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding the sale of estimated harvest of dates on the trees. This means that if someone has an estimate of how many dates are on a tree, they can sell them even if they have not been harvested yet. This is because it is difficult to know exactly how many dates will be harvested from each tree, so this concession allows people to make an educated guess and still be able to sell their produce. It also teaches us that we should be honest in our dealings with others and not take advantage of them by overcharging or undercharging for goods or services.
