Sunan Ibn Majah 1598 (Book 6, Hadith 166) #30950
The Reward of Saying Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajiun

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that when a Muslim is faced with a calamity, if they respond by saying the words Allah has commanded, Allah will reward them and compensate them with something better than what they lost.

It was narrated from Umm Salamah that Abu Salamah told her that he heard the Messenger of Allah say: "There is no Muslim who is stricken with a calamity and reacts by saying as Allah has commanded: 'Inna lillahi, wa inna ilayhi raji’un. Allahumma indaka ahtasabtu musibati, fajurni fiha, wa 'awwidni minha (Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me for it and compensate me),’ but Allah will reward him for that and compensate him with something better than it". She said: "When Abu Salamah died, I remembered what he had told me from the Messenger of Allah and I said: 'Inna lillahi, wa inna ilayhi raji’un. Allahumma indaka ahtasabtu musibati, fajurni alaiha (Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me for it).’ But when I wanted to say wa 'awwidni minha (and compensate me with better), I said to myself: 'How can I be compensated with something better than Abu Salamah?’ Then I said it, and Allah compensated me with Muhammad and rewarded me for my calamity".

QUICK LESSONS:
Responding positively when faced with calamities by saying "Innalillahi wainnailaihiraji'oon"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how Muslims should react when faced with a calamity. It is narrated from Umm Salamah that Abu Salamah told her that he heard the Messenger of Allah say that if a Muslim reacts to their affliction by saying “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun”, which translates to “Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return”, then Allah will reward them for it and compensate them with something better than what they lost. Umm Salamah then recounts how she remembered this hadith after her husband passed away and said the words as instructed. She was rewarded for it as she was compensated with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who was much better than her husband. This hadith teaches us that even in times of distress or sadness we should remember our Lord and turn to Him for help instead of despairing or giving up hope. We must also have faith in His promise that He will always replace whatever we lose with something much better if only we turn back to Him in repentance.
