The Power of Forgiveness

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ recited a verse from the Quran and repeated it until morning, emphasizing that if God punishes or forgives people, He is the All-Mighty and All-Wise.

It was narrated that Jasrah bint Dijajah said: "I heard Abu Dharr say: 'The Prophet stood reciting a Verse and repeating it until morning came. That Verse was: "If you punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You, are the All- Mighty, the All-Wise.’"" 5:118
حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ خَلَفٍ أَبُو بِشْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ قُدَامَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ جَسْرَةَ بِنْتِ دَجَاجَةَ، قَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا ذَرٍّ، يَقُولُ قَامَ النَّبِيُّ ـ ـ بِآيَةٍ حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ يُرَدِّدُهَا وَالآيَةُ ‏{إِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ}‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the power of forgiveness. It was narrated by Jasrah bint Dijajah that she heard Abu Dharr say that the Prophet stood reciting a verse from the Quran and repeating it until morning came. The verse was “If you punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You, are the All- Mighty, the All-Wise” [ 5:118 ]. This hadith emphasizes that God is all powerful and wise in His decisions to either punish or forgive people for their wrongdoings. It teaches us to be forgiving towards others as God is forgiving towards us.
