Sahih al-Bukhari 3199 (Book 59, Hadith 10) #3057
The Fixed Course of the Sun

SUMMARY: The sun follows a fixed course and is not allowed to deviate from it, as decreed by Allah.

Narrated Abu Dhar: The Prophet asked me at sunset, "Do you know where the sun goes (at the time of sunset)?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better". He said, "It goes (ie travels) till it prostrates Itself underneath the Throne and takes the permission to rise again, and it is permitted and then (a time will come when) it will be about to prostrate itself but its prostration will not be accepted, and it will ask permission to go on its course but it will not be permitted, but it will be ordered to return whence it has come and so it will rise in the west. And that is the interpretation of the Statement of Allah: "And the sun Runs its fixed course For a term (decreed). that is The Decree of (Allah) The Exalted in Might, The All- Knowing". (36:38)

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that the sun follows a fixed course and is not allowed to deviate from it. This is in accordance with the decree of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad asked Abu Dhar about where the sun goes at sunset and Abu Dhar replied that only Allah and His Apostle know better. The Prophet then explained that when the sun sets it prostrates itself underneath the Throne and takes permission to rise again. It will be permitted but eventually there will come a time when its prostration will not be accepted anymore and it will be ordered to return whence it has come. Thus, rising in the west instead of east like usual. This hadith explains verse 36:38 from Quran which states “And the sun Runs its fixed course For a term (decreed). That is The Decree of (Allah) The Exalted in Might, The All-Knowing” which means that everything happens according to what has been decreed by Allah Almighty who knows all things best.
