Sahih al-Bukhari 3170 (Book 58, Hadith 12) #3029
Invoking Evil in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that the Qunut should be recited before bowing in prayer and invoked evil on the tribe of Bani-Sulaim for one month after bowing.

Narrated 'Asim: I asked Anas about the Qunut (ie invocation in the prayer). Anas said, "It should be recited before bowing". I said, "So-and-so claims that you say that it should be recited after bowing". He replied, "He is mistaken". Then Anas narrated to us that the Prophet invoked evil on the tribe of Bani-Sulaim for one month after bowing'. Anas Further said, "The Prophet had sent 40 or 70 Qaris (ie men well versed in the knowledge of the Qur'an) to some pagans, but the latter struggled with them and martyred them, although there was a peace pact between them and the Prophet I had never seen the Prophet so sorry and worried about anybody as he was about them (ie the Qaris).

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow instructions while praying correctly; Seek justice through proper channels; Respect religious scholars/knowledgeable people; Remain patient even when feeling angry or resentful towards someone who has wronged you

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of prayer and how to perform it correctly. It was narrated by Anas ibn Malik that he asked him about the Qunut which is an invocation made during prayer. Anas said that it should be recited before bowing. He then told a story of how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ invoked evil on a tribe called Bani-Sulaim for one month after bowing in prayer as punishment for their actions against some Quranic scholars who were sent to them as ambassadors from Medina. This hadith teaches us that we must take our prayers seriously and follow its instructions carefully so we can receive its blessings and rewards from Allah SWT. We also learn from this hadith that even though we may feel anger or resentment towards someone who has wronged us, we must still remain patient and seek justice through proper channels instead of taking matters into our own hands or seeking revenge without due process.
