Granting Asylum in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) granted asylum to a man who was being threatened by Um Hani's brother, Ali.

Narrated Um Hani: the daughter of Abu Talib: I went to Allah's Messenger on the day of the conquest of Mecca and found him taking a bath, and his daughter Fatima was screening him. I greeted him and he asked, "Who is that?" I said, "I, Um Hani bint Abi Talib". He said, "Welcome, O Um Hani". When he had finished his bath, he stood up and offered eight rak'at while dressed in one garment. I said, "O Allah's Messenger ! My brother 'Ali has declared that he will kill a man to whom I have granted asylum. The man is so and-so bin Hubaira". Allah's Messenger said, "O Um Hani! We will grant asylum to the one whom you have granted asylum". (Um Hani said, "That (visit) took place in the Duha (ie forenoon)).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of granting asylum in Islam. It is narrated by Um Hani bint Abi Talib, who went to visit the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). She found him taking a bath and his daughter Fatima was screening him. When he finished his bath, he offered eight rak'at while dressed in one garment. Um Hani then told him that her brother Ali had declared that he would kill a man whom she had granted asylum to. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) then said that they would grant asylum to the one whom she had already given it to. This shows us how important it is for Muslims to protect those who seek refuge and safety from harm or danger, as this is an act of mercy and compassion which Allah loves and rewards greatly. We should always strive towards protecting those who are vulnerable or persecuted, as this will bring us closer to Allah's pleasure and reward us with His mercy on the Day of Judgment.
