Sahih al-Bukhari 3127 (Book 57, Hadith 36) #2990
Kindness and Generosity of the Prophet (ﷺ)

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) showed kindness and generosity to a bad-tempered man by giving him a silken cloak with golden buttons.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abu Mulaika: Some silken cloaks with golden buttons were presented to the Prophet. He distributed them amongst his companions and kept one for Makhrama, bin Naufal. Later on Makhrama came along with his son Al-Miswar bin Makhrama, and stood up at the gate and said (to his son)".Call him (ie the Prophet) to me". The Prophet heard his voice, took a silken cloak and brought it to him, placing those golden buttons in front of him saying, "O Abu-al-Miswar! I have kept this aside for you! O Abu-al Miswar! I have kept this aside for you!" Makhrama was a bad-tempered man.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the kindness and generosity of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It tells us how he gave away some silken cloaks with golden buttons to his companions as gifts. One of them was kept aside for Makhrama bin Naufal who was known for being bad tempered. When he came to the gate with his son Al-Miswar bin Makhrama, the Prophet ﷺ heard his voice and brought out the cloak for him saying “I have kept this aside for you” twice in order to show him respect despite knowing that he was bad tempered. This hadith teaches us that we should always be kind and generous towards others regardless of their attitude or behaviour towards us as it is an important part of our faith as Muslims. We should also strive to treat everyone equally without any discrimination or prejudice based on their social status or background in order to follow in the footsteps of our beloved prophet ﷺ .
