Sunan Ibn Majah 287 (Book 1, Hadith 21) #29639
The Benefits of Using the Tooth Stick

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) suggested that it would be beneficial for Muslims to use the tooth stick at every time of prayer, but he refrained from making it a command due to its difficulty.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Were it not that it would be too difficult for my Ummah (nation), I would have commanded them to use the tooth stick at every time of prayer'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Use a toothstick before praying whenever possible .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of using a tooth stick, also known as siwak in Arabic. It was narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that if it were not too difficult for his Ummah, he would have commanded them to use the tooth stick at every time of prayer. This suggests that using a tooth stick is beneficial and important for Muslims when they are performing their prayers. However, due to its difficulty, he refrained from making it an obligation or commandment. Therefore, although not obligatory, Muslims should still strive to use a tooth stick before each prayer as much as possible in order to reap its benefits and maintain good oral hygiene.
