The Chosen Lineage of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: Allah chose Isma'il from the children of Ibrahim, and then chose Banu Kinanah from the children of Isma'il, and then chose the Quraish from Banu Kinanah, and then chose Banu Hashim from Quraish, and finally He chose Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Banu Hashim.

Narrated Wathilah bin Al-Asqa': that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed Allah has chosen Isma'il from the children of Ibrahim, and He chose Banu Kinanah from the children of Isma'il, and He chose the Quraish from Banu Kinanah, and He chose Banu Hashim from Quraish, and He chose me from Banu Hashim".

حَدَّثَنَا خَلاَّدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ، عَنْ وَاثِلَةَ بْنِ الأَسْقَعِ، رضى الله عنه قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَى مِنْ وَلَدِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بَنِي كِنَانَةَ وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ بَنِي كِنَانَةَ قُرَيْشًا وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَاصْطَفَانِي مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ

This hadith explains how Allah has chosen a lineage for His beloved prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It starts with Ibrahim as who was chosen by Allah to be a leader of mankind. Then it moves on to his son Ishmael who was also chosen by Allah. From his descendants came the tribe called Kinanah which was also chosen by Allah. Then came the tribe called Quraysh which was again chosen by Allah for its special qualities. Finally, it is mentioned that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself is a part of this lineage that has been specially selected by Almighty God Himself! This hadith teaches us that we should be proud of our ancestry and strive to live up to its standards so that we can make our ancestors proud too!
