Killing Infidels in War

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) instructed his companions to kill an infidel spy and rewarded the one who killed him with the belongings of the spy.

Narrated Salama bin Al-Akwa': "An infidel spy came to the Prophet while he was on a journey. The spy sat with the companions of the Prophet and started talking and then went away. The Prophet said (to his companions), 'Chase and kill him'. So, I killed him". The Prophet then gave him the belongings of the killed spy (in addition to his share of the war booty).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a situation that occurred during a journey of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. An infidel spy came and sat with the companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and started talking before leaving. The Prophet ﷺ then instructed his companions to chase and kill him. Salama bin Al-Akwa' was one of those who followed this instruction and killed the infidel spy. As a reward for killing him, he was given all his belongings in addition to his share from war booty. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible to fight against those who are enemies of Islam in order to protect Muslims from harm or danger as long as it is done according to Islamic laws and regulations. It also teaches us that good deeds should be rewarded accordingly so people will be encouraged to do more good deeds for Allah's sake only without expecting any worldly rewards or benefits in return.
