Jami at-Tirmidhi 3140 (Book 47, Hadith 192) #28789
The Revelation of Verses in Response to Questions

SUMMARY: This hadith explains how the Quraish asked the Jews to give them something to ask Prophet Muhammad about, and how Allah revealed verses in response.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: "The Quraish said to the Jews: 'Give us something that we can ask this man about'. So he said: 'Ask him about the Ruh'. So they asked him about the Ruh. So Allah Most High, revealed: They ask you concerning the Ruh. Say: The Ruh is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you have been given only a little (17:85). They replied: 'We have been given immense knowledge, we were given the Tawrah, and whoever has been given the Tawrah, then he has indeed been given a wealth of knowledge'. So the following was revealed: Say: 'If the sea were ink for the Words of my Lord, surely the sea would be exhausted (before the Words of my Lord would be finished) (18:109)'"

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask questions humbly and respectfully; Seek guidance from God; Acknowledge others’ knowledge

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a conversation between the Quraish and the Jews. The Quraish asked the Jews for something they could ask Prophet Muhammad about, so that they could test his knowledge. In response, Allah revealed two verses from Surah Al-Isra and Al-Kahf respectively. The first verse was a reminder that only Allah has complete knowledge of all things; while the second verse was an example of how vast Allah's knowledge is compared to ours. These verses were meant as a reminder that we should not be arrogant with our limited knowledge but instead seek guidance from Allah who knows all things. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us that we should always be humble when asking questions or seeking answers from others as it is only through divine revelation that one can truly understand matters related to faith and religion.
