Jami at-Tirmidhi 3141 (Book 47, Hadith 193) #28790
Knowledge of the Ruh

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the Ruh, and he responded that the knowledge of it is only with Allah and that humans have been given only a little knowledge.

Narrated 'Abdullah: "I took a walk with the Prophet on a farm in Al-Madinah, and when he reclined upon a palm-leaf stalk, a group of Jews were passing by. Some of them said, 'We should question him'. Others said: 'Do not question him for he might tell you something that you do not like'. They said to him: 'O Abul-Qasim, narrated to us about the Ruh'. The Prophet stood for some time, he raised his head toward the heavens, and I recognized revelation was coming to him, until the revelation ceased. Then he said: "The Ruh is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you have been given only a little (17:85)'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek guidance from God when faced with difficult questions or situations .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a conversation between the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and some Jews. The Jews asked him about something called "the Ruh" which translates to "the Spirit". The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) paused for a moment as if he was receiving revelation from Allah. He then said that only Allah knows what this thing called "the Ruh" is and that humans have been given very little knowledge compared to what Allah knows. This hadith teaches us to remember our place in relation to Allah's power and knowledge; we should not think too highly of ourselves or our own understanding because there are many things we do not know or understand. We should also remember to seek guidance from Allah when faced with difficult questions or situations because He alone has all the answers.
