Sahih al-Bukhari 2992 (Book 56, Hadith 201) #2861
Mindful Speech in the Presence of Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of being mindful of one's words and actions, as Allah is always with us and hears all that we say.

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari: We were in the company of Allah's Messenger (during Hajj). Whenever we went up a high place we used to say: "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Allah is Greater," and our voices used to rise, so the Prophet said, "O people! Be merciful to yourselves (ie don't raise your voice), for you are not calling a deaf or an absent one, but One Who is with you, no doubt He is All-Hearer, ever Near (to all things).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be conscious and respectful when speaking in God's presence

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of being mindful when speaking in the presence of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was travelling with his companions during Hajj, and whenever they went up a high place they would call out "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Allah is Greater". The Prophet ﷺ then reminded them that although it may seem like they are calling out to someone who cannot hear them, this is not true - for He is All-Hearer and ever Near. In other words, even though we may not see Him or feel His presence directly, He still hears us at all times. Therefore it is important for us to be conscious of our speech when speaking in His presence - for our words should reflect our respect for Him as well as our understanding that He can hear everything we say.
