Jami at-Tirmidhi 2007 (Book 27, Hadith 113) #27640
Doing Good in the Face of Evil

SUMMARY: People should always strive to do good, regardless of how others treat them.

Hudhaifah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: "Do not be a people without a will of your own, saying: 'If people treat us well, we will treat them well; and if they do wrong, we will do wrong,' but accustom yourselves to do good if people do good, and do not behave unjustly if they do evil".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to always do good regardless of how others treat you. Have a will of your own and remain true to your values and principles despite difficult situations or unjust behavior from others. Accustom yourself with doing good so it becomes second nature for you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages people to be proactive in doing good and not reactive. It teaches us that we should not wait for others to do something before we act, but rather strive to do good even if those around us are doing wrong. We should have a will of our own and make sure that our actions are based on what is right and just, no matter what other people may be doing. This hadith also reminds us that it is important to accustom ourselves with doing good so that it becomes second nature for us; this way, when faced with difficult situations or people who are behaving unjustly, we can still remain true to our values and principles without being swayed by their behavior.
