Jami at-Tirmidhi 1862 (Book 26, Hadith 2) #27492
The Consequences of Drinking Alcohol

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that if someone drinks alcohol, their prayers will not be accepted for forty days. If they repent and return to drinking alcohol, their prayers will not be accepted again for forty days. If they continue to drink after repenting three times, Allah will not accept their repentance and they will be given a drink from the river of Al-Khabal which is a river of pus from the inhabitants of Hell.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: That the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever drinks Khamr, Salat is not accepted from him for forty days. If he repents, then Allah will accept his repentance. It he returns to it, then Allah will not accept his Salat for forty days. If he repents, then Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to it, then Allah will not accepts his Salat for forty days. If he repents, then Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to it a fourth time, Allah will not accept his Salat for forty days, and if he were to repent, Allah would not accept his repentance, and he will be given to drink from the river of Al-Khabal". They said: "O Aby 'Abdur-Rahman! What is the river of Al-Khabal?" He said: "A river of the pus from the inhabitants of the Fire". Abu 'Eisa said: This Hadith is Hasan. Similar to this has been reported from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr and Ibn 'Abbas from the Prophet .

QUICK LESSONS:
Stay away from sinning including drinking alcohol

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that if someone drinks alcohol, known as Khamr in Arabic, then their prayers or Salat will not be accepted by Allah for forty days. However, if they repent and turn away from drinking alcohol then Allah may accept their repentance. But if they continue to drink after repenting three times then Allah will no longer accept their repentance and instead give them a drink from the river of Al-Khabal which is a river filled with pus coming from the inhabitants of Hellfire. This hadith teaches us that we should stay away from drinking alcohol as it can lead us down an irreversible path with serious consequences in this life and in the hereafter.
