Jami at-Tirmidhi 1602 (Book 21, Hadith 65) #27213
Honoring Jews and Christians

SUMMARY: It is disliked to honor Jews and Christians by greeting them first, and when one meets them on the path, they should not yield the path for them.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: That the Messenger of Allah said: "Do not precede the Jews and the Christians with the Salam. And if one you meets one of them in the path, then force him to its narrow portion". He said: There are narrations on this topic from Ibn 'Umar, Anas, and Abu Basrah Al-Ghifari the Companion of the Prophet . Abu 'Eisa said: This Hadith is Hasan Sahih. And regarding the meaning of this Hadith: "Do not precede the Jews and the Christians": Some of the people of knowledge said that it only means that it is disliked because it would be honoring them, and the Muslims were ordered to humiliate them. For this reason, when one of them is met on the path, then the path is not yielded for him, because doing so would amount to honoring them.

QUICK LESSONS:
Treat everyone with respect regardless of their religion or beliefs; Do not give special treatment to any particular group of people

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that it is disliked to honor Jews and Christians by greeting them first. When one meets a Jew or Christian on the path, they should not yield the path for them as this would amount to honoring them. This hadith was narrated by several companions of Prophet Muhammad such as Abu Hurairah, Ibn 'Umar, Anas and Abu Basrah Al-Ghifari. The scholars of Islam have said that this means it is disliked because it would be honoring them which goes against Islamic teachings. We must remember that we are all equal in front of Allah regardless of our religion or beliefs so we must treat everyone with respect but not give special treatment to any particular group of people.
