Jami at-Tirmidhi 1603 (Book 21, Hadith 66) #27214
Responding to Jewish Greetings

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught Muslims to respond to a Jewish greeting with a polite response.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: That the Messenger of Allah said: "Indeed when a Jew gives Salam to one of you, then he is only saying: 'As-Samu 'Alaikum' (Death be upon you) so say: "Alaik (And upon you)'." Abu 'Eisa said: This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be respectful and courteous towards others regardless of their faith or culture.
EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught Muslims how to respond when greeted by a Jew. He said that when a Jew greets someone with the phrase “As-Samu 'Alaikum”, which means “Death be upon you” in Arabic, the Muslim should reply with “Alaik” which means “And upon you”. This hadith teaches us that even if someone is not of our faith or culture, we should still treat them kindly and politely. We should not let our differences get in the way of being respectful and courteous towards one another.
