Prohibitions Regarding Graves

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad prohibited people from plastering graves, writing on them, building over them, and treading on them.

Jabir narrated: "The Messenger of Allah prohibited plastering graves, writing on them, building over them, and treading on them".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for the deceased , Follow Allah's commandments

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibitions regarding graves. The Prophet Muhammad taught us that it is not permissible to plaster graves, write on them, build over them or tread on them. Plastering a grave means covering it with cement or any other material in order to make it look more attractive. Writing anything on a grave is also forbidden as this could lead to idolatry and worshipping of the dead person buried there. Building anything over a grave such as a structure or monument is also not allowed as this could lead to people worshipping the dead person instead of Allah alone. Lastly, we should not walk or stand upon a grave as this shows disrespect for the deceased and their family members who visit their gravesite for remembrance and prayer.

The values taught by this hadith are respect for the deceased and reverence towards Allah's commandments. We should remember that all life belongs to Allah alone and He has given us instructions which must be followed in order to show our love and obedience towards Him.
