Jami at-Tirmidhi 515 (Book 4, Hadith 28) #26080
Raising Hands in Supplication

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Umarah bin Rawaibah Ath-Thaqafi criticizing Bishr bin Marwan for raising his hands too high while delivering a sermon.

Husain narrated: "I heard Umarah bin Rawaibah Ath-Thaqafi - while Bishr bin Marwan was delivering Khutbah and raising his hands in supplication - so Umarah said: 'May Allah disgrace these two insignificant hands, I have seen Allah's Messenger, and he would not do any more than this;'" and Hushaim (one of the narrators) motioned with his index finger.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow the example of Prophet Muhammad while performing religious rituals such as sermons or supplications
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the proper way to deliver a sermon. Umarah bin Rawaibah Ath-Thaqafi was present when Bishr bin Marwan was delivering a sermon and raising his hands in supplication. Umarah then criticized him for raising his hands too high as he had seen the Prophet Muhammad doing no more than this. Hushaim then motioned with his index finger to demonstrate what he meant. This hadith teaches us that we should not exaggerate our actions when performing religious rituals such as sermons or supplications; rather, we should follow the example of Prophet Muhammad and do no more than what he did.
