SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) disapproved of Jabir's response when he asked who was at the door.

Jabir said that he went to the prophet about the debt of my father. He said : I knocked at the door. He asked : who is there? I replied: it is I. he said: I, as though he disapproved of it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful and respectful in your responses to greetings

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of being respectful and mindful when responding to a greeting. When Jabir went to visit the Prophet Muhammad, he knocked on the door and was asked “who is there?” He responded with “it is I”, which displeased the Prophet. This teaches us that we should always be mindful of our words and use respectful language when responding to a greeting or question. We should not be too casual in our responses as this can come off as disrespectful or rude. Instead, we should use polite language such as “It is I” or “It is me” instead of just saying “I”. Additionally, it teaches us that even small things like how we respond to a greeting can have an impact on how people perceive us and our character.
