Comparing Oneself to Another Prophet

SUMMARY: It is not appropriate for a prophet to compare themselves to another prophet.

'Abd Allah b. Ja’far reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying: It is not fitting for a prophet to say : I am better than Jonah son of matta.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect other Prophets
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of respecting other prophets and not comparing oneself to them. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, taught that it is inappropriate for a prophet to say they are better than another prophet. This hadith teaches us that we should respect all prophets and not think ourselves superior or inferior in comparison. We should also remember that all prophets were sent by God with the same message - one of peace and justice - and so we should strive towards this goal in our own lives as well.
