Sunan Abi Dawud 3943 (Book 31, Hadith 18) #24233
Emancipation of Slaves

SUMMARY: If someone has the means to free a slave, they should do so completely. If not, they should free them to the extent of their share.

Ibn 'Umar reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: If anyone emancipates his share in a slave, he should emancipate him completely if he has enough money to pay the full price ; but if he has none, he will be emancipated to the extent of his share.

QUICK LESSONS:
Make efforts towards freeing enslaved people according to one's means and resources available at hand
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the emancipation of slaves. It is reported by Ibn 'Umar that Prophet Muhammad said that if someone has enough money to pay for a slave's full price, then they should emancipate them completely. However, if they do not have enough money, then they should emancipate them to the extent of their share. This hadith teaches us that freeing slaves is an important act and it is encouraged in Islam as long as one can afford it. It also shows us how important it is for people who are unable to pay for a slave's full price still make an effort and free them partially according to their means and resources available at hand.
