Sunan Abi Dawud 3937 (Book 31, Hadith 12) #24227
Emancipation of Slaves

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that if someone emancipates a slave, they should completely free them if they have the money to do so. If not, the slave should be allowed to work for their freedom but not be overburdened.

Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet as saying: If anyone emancipates a share in his slave, he should completely emancipate him if he has money; but if he has none, then slave will be required to work (to pay for his freedom), but he must not be overburdened.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the emancipation of slaves. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that if someone has enough money to free a slave then they should do so completely and without hesitation. However, if someone does not have enough money then the slave can work for their freedom but must not be overburdened with too much work or too little pay. This hadith teaches us about justice and fairness in dealing with others as well as compassion and mercy towards those who are less fortunate than ourselves. It also reminds us of our responsibility towards those who are enslaved or oppressed in any way and encourages us to help them gain their freedom whenever we can.
