Sunan Abi Dawud 3586 (Book 25, Hadith 16) #23876
The Right Opinion

SUMMARY: The opinion of the Messenger of Allah is right because it was inspired by Allah, whereas our opinions are mere guesses and assumptions.

Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab: Umar said while he was (sitting) on the pulpit: O people, the opinion from the Messenger of Allah was right, because Allah showed (ie inspired) him; but from us it is sheer conjecture and artifice.

QUICK LESSONS:
Rely on divine revelation over personal judgement . Respect religious authority . Accept one’s limitations in understanding divine truth .

EXPLANATIONS:
Umar ibn al-Khattab was a companion of Prophet Muhammad and the second Caliph after him. He was known for his wisdom and knowledge. In this hadith, he is teaching us that we should not rely on our own opinions or guesses when it comes to matters related to religion or faith. Instead, we should look to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad as they were inspired by Allah Himself. This means that these teachings are more reliable than any opinion we may have ourselves. We should also be aware that even though our own opinions may seem logical or reasonable, they could still be wrong if they contradict what has been revealed in Islam. Therefore, it is important for us to always refer back to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad when making decisions about religious matters.
