Sunan Abi Dawud 3540 (Book 24, Hadith 125) #23830
The Gift of Giving

SUMMARY: Donors should not take back their gifts without informing the recipient and providing a valid reason.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: The Prophet said: The similitude of the one who takes back what he gifted is like that of a dog which vomits and then it eats vomit. When a donor seeks to take back (his gift), it should be made known and he informed why he sought to take it back. Then whatever he donated should be returned to him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously without expecting anything in return; Respectfully communicate when seeking to take something back; Inform recipients why you are taking something back before returning it .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of giving and generosity. It teaches us that when we give something away, it should be done with an open heart and without any expectation of return. The Prophet Muhammad is teaching us that if someone does seek to take back what they have given away, they must inform the recipient why they are doing so and then return it to them. This hadith also serves as a reminder that taking back what you have given away is not a good thing; it is like a dog eating its own vomit which is disgusting and unpleasant.

The Prophet Muhammad was teaching us about being generous with our time, money or resources without expecting anything in return; this can be seen as an act of worship in itself as we are pleasing Allah by helping others in need. We should also remember that if someone does seek to take back what they have given away for whatever reason, we must respect their wishes but also remind them of the importance of giving generously without expecting anything in return.
