Sunan Abi Dawud 3539 (Book 24, Hadith 124) #23829
The Inadmissibility of Taking Back Gifts and Donations

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to take back a gift or donation, except in the case of a father and his child.

Narrated Abdullah Ibn Umar ; Abdullah Ibn Abbas: The Prophet said: It is not lawful for a man to make a donation or give a gift and then take it back, except a father regarding what he gives his child. One who gives a gift and then takes it back is like a dog which eats and vomits when it is full, then returns to its vomit.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your gifts & donations without expecting anything in return .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that it is not permissible for someone to give something as a gift or donation and then take it back. This applies to all people except for fathers who are giving something to their children. The Prophet Muhammad likened this action to that of a dog which eats until it is full, vomits what it has eaten, but then goes back and eats the vomit again. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our gifts and donations without expecting anything in return; if we do expect something in return, we should not give the gift or donation at all.
