The Dangers of Selling What You Don't Possess

SUMMARY: Do not sell something that you do not possess.

Narrated Hakim ibn Hizam: Hakim asked (the Prophet): Messenger of Allah, a man comes to me and wants me to sell him something which is not in my possession. Should I buy it for him from the market? He replied: Do not sell what you do not possess.
حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ، عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مَاهَكَ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ، قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَأْتِينِي الرَّجُلُ فَيُرِيدُ مِنِّي الْبَيْعَ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي أَفَأَبْتَاعُهُ لَهُ مِنَ السُّوقِ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ تَبِعْ مَا لَيْسَ عِنْدَكَ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is a warning from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about the dangers of selling something that one does not possess. It is narrated by Hakim ibn Hizam, who asked the Prophet ﷺ if it was permissible to sell something he did not have in his possession. The Prophet ﷺ replied with a clear and concise answer - “Do not sell what you do not possess”. This hadith teaches us to be honest and truthful in our dealings, as well as to be mindful of our actions and words when engaging in transactions with others. We should always strive to ensure that we are honest and transparent when dealing with others, so as to avoid any potential harm or damage caused by dishonesty or deceitful behaviour.
