Prohibiting Renting Land

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ forbade renting land.

Abu Dawud said: I read out (this tradition) to Sa'id b. Ya'qub al-Taliqini, and I said to him: Ibn al-Mubarak transmitted (this tradition) to you from Sa'id Abi Shuja' who said: 'Uthman b. Sahl b. Rafi' b. Khadij narrated it to me saying: I was an orphan being nourished under the guardianship of Rafi' b. Khadij and I performed Hajj with him. My brother 'Imran b. Sahl then came to me and said: We rented out land to so-and-so for two hundred Dirhams. He said: Leave it, for the Prophet forbade renting land.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet's prohibition of renting land for a certain amount of money, such as two hundred dirhams in this case. It is narrated by Uthman b. Sahl b. Rafi' b. Khadij, who was an orphan being taken care of by his guardian Rafi' and performed Hajj with him at the time when his brother 'Imran came to him and told him that they had rented out their land for two hundred dirhams, to which he replied that it was forbidden according to the Prophet's teachings and instructions. This hadith teaches us that we should not rent out our lands or properties for any amount of money as it goes against the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ).
