Sunan Abi Dawud 3284 (Book 22, Hadith 43) #23574
Emancipation of Believing Slave

SUMMARY: A man brought a black slave girl to the Prophet and asked for her emancipation. The Prophet tested her faith by asking her questions about Allah and himself, and upon finding out that she was a believer, he set her free.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: A man brought the Prophet a black slave girl. He said: Messenger of Allah, emancipation of believing slave is due to me. He asked her: Where is Allah ? She pointed to the heaven with her finger. He then asked her: Who am I ? She pointed to the Prophet and to the heaven, that is to say: You are the Messenger of Allah. He then said: Set her free, she is a believer.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the emancipation of believing slaves. It tells us that if someone is a believer in Allah, then they should be set free from slavery. The Prophet tested the faith of this slave girl by asking her two questions - where is Allah and who am I? When she pointed to the sky when asked about Allah, it showed that she believed in Him as He is above all things. When she pointed to the Prophet when asked who he was, it showed that she believed in him as His messenger sent by God. Upon finding out that she was indeed a believer, he set her free from slavery as believers should not be enslaved or oppressed but rather given freedom so they can practice their faith without any hindrance or fear. This hadith teaches us values such as justice and mercy towards those who are oppressed or enslaved due to their beliefs; it also teaches us respect for those who are different from us in terms of race or religion; finally it teaches us humility towards our Creator - no matter how powerful we may become on earth we must always remember our place before Him and show reverence for His laws which include justice towards all people regardless of their background or beliefs.
