Sunan Abi Dawud 3278 (Book 22, Hadith 37) #23568
Making Atonement for Oaths

SUMMARY: Making atonement for an oath is necessary before doing the better thing.

A similar tradition has been transmitted by 'Abd al-Rahman b. Samurah through a different chain if narrators. This version has: "Make atonement for your oath and then do the thing that is better". Abu Dawud said: The version of this tradition transmitted by Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, 'Adi b. Hatim and Abu Hurairah are variant. Some of them indicate breaking the oath before making atonement, and other making atonement before breaking the oath.

QUICK LESSONS:
Make atonement for your oaths if you cannot fulfill them .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when we make an oath or promise to do something, it is important to fulfill it or make atonement for it before doing something else that may be better. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this lesson through his companions who narrated different versions of this hadith with some indicating breaking the oath before making atonement and others indicating making atonement before breaking the oath. This shows us that fulfilling our promises is a priority in Islam and should not be taken lightly as Allah will hold us accountable for our actions in the hereafter.
