Sunan Abi Dawud 3277 (Book 22, Hadith 36) #23567
Making Atonement for Oaths

SUMMARY: Making atonement for an oath is better than breaking it, and one should do the thing that is better.

Narrated 'Abd al-Rahman b. Samurah: The Prophet said to me: 'Abd al-Rahman b. Samurah, when you swear an oath and consider something else to be better than it, do the thing that is better and make atonement for your oath. Abu Dawud said: I heard Ahmad (b. Hanbal) permitting to make atonement before breaking the oath.

QUICK LESSONS:
Think before speaking/acting, Keep your promises

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about making atonement for an oath. An oath is a promise or statement made by someone in order to show that they are telling the truth. In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaches us that if we make an oath and then realize something else would be better than what we promised, then we should do the thing that is better and make atonement for our oath. This means that instead of breaking our promise, we can still keep it by doing something else to make up for it. This teaches us to be honest in our promises and not break them easily without trying to find a way out of them first. It also shows us how important it is to think before making any promises or statements so as not to regret them later on.
