Sunan Abi Dawud 3268 (Book 22, Hadith 27) #23558
Interpreting Dreams in Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him of his dream. Abu Bakr interpreted it, but the Prophet ﷺ said he was partly right and partly wrong. He then warned the man not to adjure him.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Abu Hurairah narrated that a man came to the Messenger of Allah and said: I had a dream last night, and he then mentioned it. So Abu Bakr interpreted it. The Prophet said: You are partly right and partly wrong. He then said: I adjure you, Messenger of Allah, may my father be sacrificed on you, do tell me the mistake I have committed. The Prophet said: Do not adjure.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be humble when seeking knowledge from others; Be careful when interpreting dreams; Respectfully ask for interpretations without adjuring anyone; Listen carefully to advice given by knowledgeable people; Have faith in Allah's will regarding your dreams' meanings .

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, a man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and told him of his dream. Abu Bakr interpreted it, but the Prophet ﷺ said he was partly right and partly wrong. This shows that interpreting dreams is not an exact science, as even those with knowledge can make mistakes in their interpretations. The Prophet ﷺ also warned against adjuring him when asking for an interpretation of a dream, as this is considered disrespectful in Islam. This hadith teaches us that we should be humble when seeking knowledge from others, even if they are knowledgeable themselves. We should also be careful when interpreting dreams as there may be mistakes made due to our limited understanding of them or other factors beyond our control.
