Avoiding Deception in Bargaining

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised a man to say "No deception" when buying something in order to avoid being betrayed in bargaining.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: A man came to the Prophet and said, "I am often betrayed in bargaining". The Prophet advised him, "When you buy something, say (to the seller), 'No deception". The man used to say so afterwards.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ إِنِّي أُخْدَعُ فِي الْبُيُوعِ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ إِذَا بَايَعْتَ فَقُلْ لاَ خِلاَبَةَ ‏"‏‏.‏ فَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ يَقُولُهُ‏.‏

In response, the Prophet ﷺ advised him to always say “No deception” when buying something, so as to make it clear that he did not want any dishonesty or cheating involved. This hadith teaches us that we should be honest and truthful in our dealings with others, and never resort to deceitful tactics such as lying or cheating. We should also be aware of our rights and responsibilities as consumers, and make sure we are not taken advantage of by dishonest sellers.
