Sunan Abi Dawud 2374 (Book 14, Hadith 62) #22665
Prohibiting Cupping and Perpetual Fasting

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prohibited cupping and perpetual fasting, but he himself observed a perpetual fast till dawn as his Lord provided him with food and drink.

Narrated 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Laila: A man from the Companions of the Prophet told me that the Messenger of Allah prohibited cupping and perpetual fasting, but he had not made them unlawful showing mercy on his Companions. Thereupon he was asked: Messenger of Allah, you observe perpetual fast till dawn. He replied: I observe perpetual fast till dawn (for) my Lord gives me food and drink.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) prohibition of cupping and perpetual fasting, but he himself observed a perpetual fast till dawn as his Lord provided him with food and drink. This hadith teaches us that although the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prohibited certain practices, he was merciful to his companions by not making them unlawful. He also showed us that we should be grateful to Allah for providing us with sustenance in our lives. We should remember that Allah is always there for us when we need Him most, just like how He provided the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with food and drink during his fasts. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us to be merciful towards others even if they do something wrong or something we don't agree with; instead of punishing them harshly, it is better to show mercy towards them so they can learn from their mistakes without feeling too much guilt or shame.
