Sahih al-Bukhari 226 (Book 4, Hadith 92) #226
The Importance of Cleanliness

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of cleanliness and how even Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) practiced it.

Narrated Abu Wail: Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari used to lay great stress on the question of urination and he used to say, "If anyone from Bani Israel happened to soil his clothes with urine, he used to cut that portion away". Hearing that, Hudhaifa said to Abu Wail, "I wish he (Abu Musa) didn't (lay great stress on that matter)". Hudhaifa added, "Allah's Messenger went to the dumps of some people and urinated while standing".

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for cleanliness in our lives, practice moderation in all matters related to faithfulness

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of cleanliness in Islam. It was narrated by Abu Wail that Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari used to stress on the issue of urination, saying that if anyone from Bani Israel happened to soil their clothes with urine, they would cut away that portion. Upon hearing this, Hudhaifa said he wished Abu Musa didn't lay so much emphasis on this matter as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) himself went to dumps and urinated while standing. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive for cleanliness in our lives and practice it as Prophet Muhammad did himself. We should also be mindful not to overstress on matters which are not necessary or important as it can lead us away from focusing on more important matters such as faith and piety.
