Love and Hatred in Marriage

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the love of Mughith for Barirah and her hatred for him, and how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) interceded on behalf of Mughith.

Ibn 'Abbas said "Mughith was a slave". He said "Apostle of Allaah make intercession for me to her (Barirah)". The Apostle of Allaah said "O Barirah fear Allaah. He is your husband and father of your child". She said "Apostle of Allaah do you command me for that? He said No, I am only interceding. Then tears were falling down on his (her husband’s) cheeks. The Apostle of Allaah said to 'Abbas "Are you not surprised with the love of Mughith for Barirah and her hatred for him".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man named Mughith who was a slave. He asked the Prophet Muhammad to make intercession on his behalf to his wife Barirah. The Prophet Muhammad told Barirah to fear Allah as Mughith was her husband and father of her child. When she asked if he was commanding her to do so he said no he was only interceding. Tears were falling down on Mughiths cheeks at this point which surprised the Prophet Muhammad as it showed how much love Mughith had for Barirah despite her hatred towards him. This hadith teaches us that even though there may be difficulties in marriage we should still strive to have love between spouses as it is an important part of marriage according to Islamic teachings. We should also remember that Allah commands us all to fear Him in all aspects of our lives including our marriages so we should always strive to obey His commands even when it may be difficult or uncomfortable for us personally.
