Giving Before Receiving

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ prohibited Ali from having intercourse with Fatimah until he gave her something, and Ali gave her his coat of mail.

Muhammad ibn Abdur Rahman ibn Thawban reported on the authority of a man from the Companions of the Prophet : When Ali married Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah , he intended to have intercourse with her. The Messenger of Allah prohibited him to do so until he gave her something. Ali said: I have nothing with me, Messenger of Allah. The Prophet said: Give her your coat of mail. So he gave her his coat of mail, and then cohabited with her.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously without expecting anything in return .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of giving before receiving. It tells the story of when Ali married Fatimah and wanted to have intercourse with her. The Prophet Muhammad prohibited him from doing so until he gave her something. Even though Ali had nothing on him at the time, he still managed to give her his coat of mail as a gift before they could be intimate together. This teaches us that it is important to give before we receive in any situation or relationship in life; whether it be marriage or friendship or anything else. We should always strive to give first and then receive later on as a reward for our generosity and kindness towards others.
