Giving Gifts on Marriage

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised Ali to give something to Fatimah when they got married, and suggested that he should give her his Hutamiyyah (coat of mail).

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: When Ali married Fatimah, the Prophet said to him: Give her something. He said: I have nothing with me. He said: Where is your Hutamiyyah (coat of mail).
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الطَّالْقَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ لَمَّا تَزَوَّجَ عَلِيٌّ فَاطِمَةَ قَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏"‏ أَعْطِهَا شَيْئًا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ مَا عِنْدِي شَىْءٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَيْنَ دِرْعُكَ الْحُطَمِيَّةُ

EXPLANATIONS:
When Ali married Fatimah, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised him to give her something as a gift. Ali told the Prophet ﷺ that he had nothing with him at the time, but the Prophet ﷺ suggested that he should give her his coat of mail called Hutamiyyah. This hadith teaches us about giving gifts on marriage which is an important part of Islamic culture and tradition. It also shows us how generous and kind-hearted our beloved prophet was towards others, even in times when people did not have much money or resources available for them.
