Sahih al-Bukhari 2313 (Book 40, Hadith 13) #2216
Permissible Use of Waqf Funds

SUMMARY: It is permissible for the trustee of a waqf to provide food and presents to those with whom he stays, as long as it is not done with the intention of collecting fortune.

Narrated 'Amr: Concerning the Waqf of 'Umar: It was not sinful of the trustee (of the Waqf) to eat or provide his friends from it, provided the trustee had no intention of collecting fortune (for himself). Ibn 'Umar was the manager of the trust of 'Umar and he used to give presents from it to those with whom he used to stay at Mecca.

QUICK LESSONS:
Use resources responsibly without any selfish intentions or greediness; Remember that all wealth belongs to Allah; Be stewards over resources entrusted by Allah
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the permissibility of using funds from a waqf. A waqf is an Islamic endowment that involves dedicating a property or asset in perpetuity for charitable purposes. The trustee of this endowment has permission to use some funds from it for providing food and presents to those with whom he stays at Mecca. However, this should not be done with the intention of collecting fortune for himself. This hadith was narrated by 'Amr ibn al-'As who was one of Prophet Muhammad's companions and an important figure in early Islamic history. This hadith teaches us that we should use our resources responsibly and ethically without any selfish intentions or greediness. We should also remember that all our wealth belongs to Allah and we are only its trustees who have been entrusted with its management on His behalf.
