Sunan Abi Dawud 1854 (Book 11, Hadith 134) #22146
Striking Locusts in Ihram

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man wearing ihram striking a swarm of locusts with his whip, and the Prophet (ﷺ) saying that it was counted along with the game of the sea.

Abu Hurairah said, We found a swarm of Locusts. A man who was wearing ihram began to strike it with his whip. He was told that his action was not valid. The fact was mentioned to the Prophet ; He said "That is counted along with the game of the sea". I heard Abu Dawud say "The narrator Abu Al Muhzim is weak. Both these traditions are based on misunderstanding.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic law and regulations; Understand cultural restrictions; Enjoy activities within boundaries; Follow God’s commands .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who was wearing ihram, which is an Islamic state of consecration during which Muslims are not allowed to hunt or harm any living creature. In this case, he found a swarm of locusts and began to strike it with his whip. He was told that his action was not valid according to Islamic law. When this fact was mentioned to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he said that it would be counted as part of the game of the sea. This means that although hunting animals while in ihram is prohibited, striking locust swarms would be considered as partaking in fishing activities instead and thus permissible under certain conditions. The lesson here is that even though we may have certain restrictions placed upon us by our faith or culture, there are still ways for us to enjoy ourselves within those boundaries without breaking any rules or laws set forth by God or society.
