Sunan Abi Dawud 1637 (Book 9, Hadith 82) #21929
The Permissibility of Sadaqah for Rich People

SUMMARY: Sadaqah is only permissible for a rich person if it is a result of Jihad, or if it is gifted by a poor neighbor, or if the rich person has been invited to a feast.

Abu-Said reported : Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) said : Sadaqah is not lawful for a rich person except what comes as a result of Jihad or what a poor neighbor gifts you out of the sadaqah given to him, or he entertains you in a feast. Abu-Dawud said : This has been transmitted by Abu- Said through a different chain of narrators in a similar way.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity according to your means; strive against your own desires and sins; be generous towards your neighbors; accept invitations for feasts graciously .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the permissibility of sadaqah for wealthy people. According to this hadith, charity is only permissible for wealthy people in three cases; when it comes as a result of jihad, when it is gifted by their poor neighbor, or when they are invited to a feast. Jihad here refers to any kind of struggle in the way of Allah such as striving against one's own desires and sins. This hadith teaches us that even though wealthy people may not be able to give charity in the same way as those who are less fortunate can do so, they still have opportunities available to them where they can give charity and help those who are less fortunate than them. It also teaches us that we should strive against our own desires and sins in order to gain rewards from Allah and help others with what we have earned through our efforts.
