Sahih al-Bukhari 216 (Book 4, Hadith 82) #216
Lessening the Punishment of Minor Sins

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) heard two people being tortured in their graves and found out that they were being punished for minor sins. He then put a green leaf of a date-palm tree on each grave to lessen their torture.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Once the Prophet, while passing through one of the graveyards of Medina or Mecca heard the voices of two persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet said, "These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid)". The Prophet then added, "Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enmity between friends). The Prophet then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave. On being asked why he had done so, he replied, "I hope that their torture might be lessened, till these get dried".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy towards those who have committed minor wrongdoings
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's mercy and compassion towards those who have committed minor sins. He heard two people being tortured in their graves and found out that they were being punished for minor sins such as not keeping themselves clean from urine, or speaking ill of others to create enmity between friends. Instead of leaving them to suffer, he showed mercy by breaking off a green leaf from a date palm tree and placing it on each grave, hoping that it would lessen their punishment until the leaves dried up. This hadith teaches us that even though we should be held accountable for our actions, we should also show mercy towards those who have committed minor wrongdoings as Allah is Most Merciful and Compassionate.
