Sunan Abi Dawud 880 (Book 2, Hadith 490) #21171
Seeking Refuge from Sin and Debt

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of seeking refuge from sin and debt, and how debt can lead to lying and breaking promises.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Messenger of Allah used to make supplication during the prayer saying: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the punishment of the grave; I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of the Antichrist; I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of life and the trial of death; O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from sin and debt". Someone said to him: How often you seek refuge from debt! He replied: When a man is in debt, he talks and tells lies, makes promises and breaks them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin, who was a wife of Prophet Muhammad. In this hadith, she talks about the supplications that Prophet Muhammad used to make during his prayers. He would seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave, trial of Antichrist, trial of life and death as well as sin and debt. When someone asked him why he sought refuge so often from debt he replied that when a man is in debt he tends to talk more than necessary which leads him to lie or break promises. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to stay away from sinning or getting into debts as it can lead us astray from our faith and cause us harm in this world as well as hereafter. We should always seek refuge in Allah for protection against all kinds of trials we may face in our lives.
