Sunan Abi Dawud 804 (Book 2, Hadith 414) #21095
Length of Prayer Recitation

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to recite a certain number of verses in the first two rak'ahs of the noon and afternoon prayers, and half that amount in the last two rak'ahs.

Abu sa’id al Khudri said: We used to estimate how long the Messenger of Allah stood in the noon and the afternoon prayer, and we estimated that he stood in the first two rak’ahs of the noon prayer as long as it takes to recite thirty verses (of the Qur’an), such as A-L-M Tanzil al-Sajdah. And we estimated that he stood in the last two rak’ahs half the time he stood in the first two rak’ahs. We estimated that he stood in the first two rak’ahs of the afternoon prayer as long as he did in the last two at noon; and we estimated that he stood in the last two rak’ahs of the afternoon prayer half the time he did in first two.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when reciting your prayers; strive to make your prayer times meaningful by focusing on what you are saying rather than just going through it quickly without any thought or contemplation; recite thirty verses from the Quran in each of the first two rak'ahs for both your noon and afternoon prayers; recite half that amount in each of their last two rak'ahs.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Abu Sa’id al Khudri explains how long the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to stand for prayer during his time. He would recite thirty verses from the Quran in each of the first two rak'ahs for both his noon and afternoon prayers, and half that amount in each of their last two rak'ahs. This is an important lesson for Muslims today as it teaches us about how we should be mindful when reciting our prayers, taking care to ensure that we are not rushing through them or taking too much time on them either. It also serves as a reminder to us all that we should strive to make our prayer times meaningful by focusing on what we are saying rather than just going through it quickly without any thought or contemplation.
