The Dangers of Hairpieces

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) warned against the use of hairpieces, citing it as a cause of destruction for the Children of Israel.

It was narrated that Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman said: "I heard Mu'awiyah say, when he was on the Minbar in Al-Madinah, and he brought out a hairpiece from his sleeve: 'O people of Al-Madinah, where are your knowledgeable ones? I heard the Messenger of Allah SAW forbid such things as this, and he said: "The Children of Israel were destroyed when their women started to wear things like this".

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, Mu'awiyah was on the Minbar in Al-Madinah and he brought out a hairpiece from his sleeve. He asked where the knowledgeable people were and reminded them that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) had forbidden such things as this. He then went on to explain that the Children of Israel were destroyed when their women started to wear things like this, known as qaza'ah in Arabic. This hadith serves as a warning to us not to follow in their footsteps and be mindful about our actions so we do not suffer similar consequences. We should take heed from this lesson and strive to live according to Islamic teachings so we can avoid destruction and remain safe from harm's way.
