Prohibitions on Wearing Silk and Gold

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) forbade wearing silk and gold unless it was broken into smaller pieces.

Abu Shaikh Al-Huna'i said: "I heard Mu'awiyah say to a group of Muhajirun and Ansar who were around him: 'Do you know that the Messenger of Allah SAW forbade wearing silk?' They said: 'By Allah, yes'. He said 'And (he forbade) wearing gold unless it was broken (into smaller pieces)?' They said: 'Yes'." 'Ali bin Ghurab contradicted him; he reported it from Bahais, from Abu Shaikh, from Ibn 'Umar.
