Five Practices of Fitrah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught that five things are part of the natural state of a person, which includes circumcision, shaving pubic hair, plucking armpit hair, clipping nails and trimming mustache.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah SAW said: 'Five things are of the Fitrah: Circumcision, shaving the pubes, plucking the armpit hair, clipping the nails and trimming the mustache'."
أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ مَسْعَدَةَ، عَنْ بِشْرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ خَمْسٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ الْخِتَانُ وَحَلْقُ الْعَانَةِ وَنَتْفُ الضَّبْعِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الظُّفْرِ وَتَقْصِيرُ الشَّارِبِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَقَفَهُ مَالِكٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us about the practices of Fitrah. Fitrah is an Arabic word meaning ‘natural disposition’ or ‘innate nature’. According to this hadith, there are five practices that are part of our natural state as humans. These include circumcision, shaving pubic hair, plucking armpit hair, clipping nails and trimming mustache. All these practices help us maintain cleanliness and hygiene in our lives which is important for our health and wellbeing. It also teaches us to take care of ourselves in a way that is pleasing to Allah SWT so we can be closer to Him through our actions.
